We were so happy it rained last evening and not just because it meant we didn’t need to water the plants.
The rain pulled some of the smog out of the air. It had been really bad. The wildfires in Ontario combined with the heat dome all over North America had a major impact on air quality. Even though we are an hour north of Columbus our area was only classed as “dangerous” whereas Columbus itself was “hazardous” and people were advised to stay indoors.
The air had a smell of plastic and we learned this is because as the smoke breaks down it forms aldehydes that give that distinctive chemical smell.
It must be awful for the poor souls in Canada who are loosing everything in these fires but they are impacting more than one hundred million people in the US metropolitan areas so something has to be done as they aren’t going away anytime soon. They are a natural phenomenon but now impacting more and more people each year.
We investigated and found that there are in theory possible ways to curtail these fires. First, find the sources fast with drones and AI. Secondly, have water available to put them out more quickly and finally find ways to contain them by clearing areas strategically.
All probably easier said than done and we know that Canada is actively working towards solutions but it’s certainly an area where global technology leaders need to collaborate because it’s impacting our trots!!!
