We slept better last night. It was cooler, both the external temperature and the heat from the sunburn had gone south. Add to this that there is only so much anxiety you can accumulate and we were all set.
I got up beside Ma and gave her my very best weighted blanket effect and she slumbered soundly.
She just had a happy dream too. Here’s how it went.
She and Auntie Carol and me were shopping in a little seaside village and buying a picture for Dad in an antique store. All the art was arranged together like patchwork.
The lady who sold the piece knew Ma had a treasure store in the same town and knew Ma was looking at her display and planning to copy it. She pretended she didn’t know though and took her $10.
Funny the way in dreams everyone can read each others mind. They all nose you know!!!!
Now we have awakened to a gale again. So what is left of the roof is probably in the parking lot at the store.
Onwards and upwards though. We have scones to bake and lots to think about on how to copy that art display!!!!!
I may snooze some more as I have catching up to do.
My poor old Ma never seems to catch a break with that old building she calls her business. It may look pretty but it’s a nightmare.
She’s poured so much money into repairs she’d have to sell enough tea to float the titanic to every recover her « investment »
The latest disaster is the roof.
As she was leaving after work ready for the weekend she noticed something very strange as she gazed up admiring at the old place from a sideways angle.
She got Auntie Paula out to take a look and she agreed there was a problem. Something must have happened during that big storm two weeks ago but what is that. Certainly not shingles!
Photos were sent to her usual handyman Tom who took one look and declared it out of the scope of his skill set. Definitely a roofers job.
She called the tenant to see if there were any leaks in the apartment above the tearoom.
« Oh yes I’ve been meaning to tell you » the tenant said «there is a leak above the fan in the dining room »
So now of course we are all anxious and Ma can’t sleep and we are praying that it doesn’t rain until the roofer comes on Monday.
Each time something happens Ma questions her own sanity in ever taking this place on.
Could this be the cure to convince her to let go and just be a retired lady who lunches in our beautiful hometown of Powell instead of a tea lady in Marion. It’s a very expensive hobby!!!
The current incumbent of my future position was in Mom’s hometown, Belfast, yesterday.
He flew in with his entourage on Air Force One.
It’s a huge jumbo jet and since I won’t need nearly as large a security squad, as I can snarl myself safe, I plan to scale back on my aircraft.
You have really got to walk the talk when it comes to environmental impact so following negotiations I expect to see a few trees planted in the Emerald Isle over the next few days.
It’s a pity I haven’t been there yet but my time will come. I’d be delighted to stay in a country kennel but downtown sure looks swell and I sense Ma might enjoy a little luxury.
I have the look down pat and I’ll be sure to give those trees a fine fertilizing treatment because I know in Ireland they won’t need much watering.
As Oscar said you gotta let things mature and evolve.
Brace yourself for this I have become an international celebrity.
Ma didn’t stop at posting our pics on Facebook for World Pet Day yesterday she also sent my snap to U105, her favorite Ulster radio station, when she got stuck in a traffic jam on the way to work.
DJ Carolyn Stewart mentioned me.
Said I was gorgeous! Absolutely spot on!!!
Wonder what she’d have thought of Memorial and her Mom who were grazing in our yard yesterday when we got up.
See our pets are not just your average domestic dudes we got dear deer too.
Yesterday after a luxurious unplanned lie in we had a very productive morning. Bank, shopping, cooking chili, baking scones and after a little lunch we adjourned for a siesta.
While we were sleeping our water provider called to ask if we had a leak or left a tap on or if any of our toilets were running as our water consumption had increased.
Dad checked everywhere and all seemed OK but then he went to the boiler room and you guessed it we had a drip drip dripping. It had soaked a whole pile of boxes and there was a puddle like a pond on the floor.
Panic! Call the plumber. The call was placed at 3:15 and the receptionist said that most likely it would be after 4:30 when they’d be able to get there so it would be the emergency rate. No problem Ma said send them please.
Guess what though Jerry arrived at 4:15, fixed the pipe that had an age related pinhole leak, and since he was here anyway did a little repair to a toilet that had a cistern problem all within the hour.
Now that’s what you call great service and just think if our water company hadn’t called the issues we might have had.
