A very important role of any canine companion is to protect their humans.

Anthropologists would tell you this is why the bond between the wolf and primitive man became so strong. Of course all good relationships are reciprocal.

Scooby was as quiet as a mouse when we got him but now he is a true defender of the home. Even with eyes closed he always seems to be vigilant to the unusual.

One of his favorite spots to sit is upstairs where he can survey all the doors and all that’s going on. Sense a scene in silence.

33050417-BC4E-466B-94AA-E0ED735504C1.jpeg
He also loves to ride shotgun when we go out in the car and will bark at people on foot who gets close. When out walking though he is fine with people and dogs moving at a steady walking pace. Once something is moving faster though like a jogger or a biker or ever a fast moving critter he’ll make his presence felt. He seems to see and appreciate differences.

Not only does he look like a little wolf he takes very good care of his pack and we are grateful.

If you are to be ready to walk at anytime you must be well rested.

Scooby’s so skilled at sleeping soundly.

He snuggles into bed between Krishna and me and never says a word till morning. Occasionally he’ll move a bit to the foot of the bed or up to the top of the pillows but he does so very discreetly you don’t notice. He has the talent to behave like a warm Teddy Bear.

When morning comes he gets up quietly with me and after a quick nip outside wakes up Aaron. While Aaron takes his shower Scooby snuggles into his warm bed. Never miss a chance for forty winks.

The pattern continues throughout the day. There can be a nap after a morning walk or after the afternoon outing. Any soft spot will do to rest your head.

Never ever ever though does sleep happen in the evening. It’s essential to keep moving then. Play ball, torture your humans as they try to banter or play war games. Make sure that you go to bed tired and ready to sleep.

A lot of the day evolves around a certain fluff ball so for a few weeks we’ll look at life from Scooby’s perspective.

His absolute favorite thing is walking. He’s ready to roll anytime of day or night. Never miss a chance to go places.

Generally this is done at a great pace that gets the heart racing but there is an occasional need to stop and sniff. Must mix the muscle groups!

Ideally if the walk can be enjoyed with a pal it’s more fun but if you can’t be with one of your own you can chase a squirrel or a bike. Just interact!

There is so much to do outside it’s hard to understand why humans spend so much time indoors. Maybe it’s because they don’t have that great fur coat. Wrap up and get going!

C4CAC972-8703-4CB0-8BE2-0B33D60E2850.jpeg
The smells are so fantastic especially the closer you can get to drains. Just breathe it in it’s a real brain teaser trying to decipher whose down there. Use your nose.

5B7A1337-E316-40B1-B94E-AFE18A8C4B5B.jpeg
Its also a good idea to make sure your presence felt. Leaving those calling cards on the mail boxes will get you noticed. Drop a little hello often. Stay in touch.

This morning thanks to the wonderful WHATsApp I talked to two of my sister in laws in Indian. Hema who lives in the USA is visiting Hamsa. Just a short chat got the day off to a good start!

The weather was perfect for taking down the outside lights, bright, sunny and calm.

Scooby was my in the yard helping me when his big buddy Enzo arrived out for a walk with his Dad.

Enzo is about the size of a small pony he’s a Leonberger and they see each other twice a day. We decided to let them have a little romp around the yard together and they had some fun.

While we were busy Dad made a great early dinner for us as Aaron is working 5-10.

So now that’s all done and dusted we’ve hunkered down to watch for the umteenth time the epic Gandhi.

The flavors of Christmas are over but there is always some spice to count on in this household and a still a few flowers too. Let’s hope they’ll  still be going strong next time the tree goes up

Blessing # 568 – Still Blooming

BOOM – Eleventh Day

If you follow British tradition you need to have your decorations down before twelfth night. Seems the idea dates from the druids and the belief that spirits live in the holly and ivy and need to be released from the home back into the forest before they get naughty!

So today they were liberated! It took quite a long time as each year more decorations accumulate. They must multiple during their hibernation in the garage.

To lighten the mood, as this job makes a body a tad sad,  Solid Gold Oldies was called on. Ironically they were playing Turn Turn Turn!

Panic set in half way through the process. Two very big boxes were already filled with baubles and snowmen. Where on earth were we going to put the rest?

D79E3784-24F5-4379-ADAF-A24C1B45CB71.jpeg

When the tree was dismantled and ready to be packed away there was a huge sigh of relief. Two more storage boxes had been tucked into the tree box and forgotten about.

So now we are all set inside for Chinese New Year on January 25.

Today we had the grand opening of our new antique mall. Everyone had worked so hard to get their booths ready for today and everything look lovely.

The weather wasn’t very cooperative as it poured all day. Nonetheless there was a steady stream of shoppers and everyone was saying how much better the new mall looked than where we’d been before.

It was a good chance to take a walk around all the other booths too. There is an absolutely eclectic mix of magic. To put that concept to the test I thought of myself as a shopper and what I’d buy for my besties.

For Phyllis since she is such a girlie girl the pink tea set.

For Patricia the very fine crystal glass that looks like it came from Versailles. It would be perfect for an Epesses that wonderful white wine that you find only in Switzerland that she doesn’t like but she buys for us.

It’s hard to believe but those of us born in the 1960s have lived in seven decades, two centuries and even two millennia.

There is always much anticipation about the record that will be top of the charts on such occasions.

AFF403F4-3664-4938-8E5C-0D23FD681911.jpeg
The current number one hit in the UK is River by Ellie Goulding. I know and love it because we dance to it in ZUMBA. Funny though that numbers 2, 3 and 4 are all great hits from the past!

Oldies are the best!

Well maybe not always!

If you look back to what the number one was at each turn of decade there is a very mixed bag.

For 1970 there was the horrendous two little boys by the equally horrendous Rolf Harris.

9D23BC98-C588-4203-A3E8-0EAD39A53149.jpeg
1980 it was The Pretenders with Brass in Pocket. What a song that was. Oh disco where are you?

1990 was a remake of Do They Know It’s Christmas by Band Aid II. Worthy but not a match for the original.

The BIG one for the millenium was the Westlife version of Seasons in the Sun! Good song and a good cover but I couldn’t remember what it was even though it was such a big deal!

BFEF3025-1D30-4AFA-A761-3F4048F625BF.jpeg
Finally, for 2010 it was so memorable I had never even heard of it! A ditty Called The Climb!

During this same period we’ve seen the rise and fall of the cassette tap and the CD. Now it would seem the vinyl of us boomers hay day is making a return and CDs are on the way out.

Everyone is downloading what they need to their phones for day to day use but the music connoisseur wants something to touch too. What could be better than an album. All that art work, all those details on lyrics too and it would seem a very special sound.

One if the dealers at our antique store has an extensive selection of classic albums and seems to do well with lots of loyal customers.

So friends if you still have your 33s or even your 45s hold onto them they could be a nice little earner!

Scooby and I were up at six as usual and had a lovely little quiet time to ourselves to start the year.

EAA06235-160D-4FE7-9655-BF09A3856652

We went for a long walk and only met a few other dogs and their walkers. Until that is we happened on a herd of deer. We’d like to think they may be Santa’s trusty helpers taking a well deserved break after their recent labors. They chewed away nonchalantly until we got very close then all eight up tails and took off.

A8377D14-F4CC-45BA-AB0C-9DD28C8A07D0

When we came home the boys were still asleep so Scooby decided he hadn’t had enough exercise and that he’d play and do stairs!

While he amused himself it was time to watched my favorites Hoda and Jenna covering all things NEW from style to healthier food choices and of course resolutions.

Mine is that I’m going to cut my screen time in half. That will mean a fair bit of free time.

Today my plan was to use it to make candles and cake neither of which went without incident.

9E808607-86E3-498E-B6EE-EA748C931848
After an hour of wax melting in the microwave my trusty little Pyrex jug exploded. Poor thing gave good service but left a mess to clean up. The microwave did need a rub down though.

With candle making now at a standstill it was time to bake. Our lovely neighbors Karen and Mike had given us a whole collection of homemade jams at Christmas. The strawberry one seems just perfect to make a Swiss Roll. A first for me

All went well except we got a bit more of a rise in the sponge than anticipated and so we have more a  Swiss Loaf or Lump than a Roll. Not to worry we’ll eat it anyway.

On yet another little trot to get in our 10000 steps all we saw was a hawk. Scooby is now out for the count so it’s a good time to have a snooze while the dinners doing.

Hope your day was good I’ll be checking up on you with a little vino later!

BOOM -Seventh Day

Some people love New Years Eve others can’t stand it. It’s not a favorite day of mine.

C66199D3-2548-4967-B430-3814B4ECBC72.jpeg

The last time I got excited about it was the millennium. Maybe my Mother’s dislike of the event rubbed off on me. She abhorred the song Auld Lang Syne that is always sung at midnight.

70D795A2-2B8D-42C4-843B-C208B4E05BC0.jpeg

Its one of those days when you’re forced to look back and there is an expectation that there should be lots of merriment. One thing I regret is not going to Times Square when we lived so close to NYNY.

9E613E69-9934-43C0-B292-7D17027D74F9.jpeg

We’ve gone to lots of fun parties on New Years Eve, hosted a few ourselves too but invariably these resulted in a not so good feeling the next morning.

It will sound so boring but now I much prefer a good movie at home and hardly ever stay up till midnight.

One thing I’ve always thought of doing is going to somewhere warm for New Year but have never got round to it.

0CDDCBFC-AEF2-4F3A-9BDE-A37C3C280480.jpeg

You see people like the Middletons on beaches in the Caribbean and it looks so appealing.

You can imagine having a nice lie on the beach or at the pool then a good late lunch and a nap to set you up for a partying. The next day maybe a spa session and then back to the beach.

CECA1561-2EE9-4ACC-AB71-4E17A60BDD1A.jpeg

But then there’d be no little wet nose to give you a warm kiss first thing in the morning or take you for a good walk so it wouldn’t be such a great start to the year at all.

A mega wind of change is blowing here. We have gusts up to seventy miles an hour. Wonder what this new decade will bring. 2020 sure sounds good doesn’t it!

The last time a double numbers thing like this happened was 1919 and my how times have changed since then. Funny New Year also fell on a Wednesday back then!

Like many expats we enjoy being connected with the homeland and today social media helps so much.

We can read the Times of India and The Belfast Telegraph online every day if we choose.

D2AC132A-B2E6-4D25-926E-F32D136AD16C.jpeg

Today the headlines in the Tele as we locals call it was about the release of state papers under the thirty year secrecy rule. Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister back then and it was the height of civil unrest in the province. Those days are thankfully long gone with so much change for good.

34202113-CBF4-4DEC-A94B-F6E7A3DF3531.jpeg
This afternoon when Aaron left for work it was too early for dinner so I decided to watch Philadelphia one of the on demand movies.

Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Antonio Banderas all looked so young and the technology you see in the movie like cameras, computers and cell phones all look so primitive.

Its the medical and social progress though that’s remarkable and encouraging. Back when the movie was made those suffering HIV and AIDS had a life sentence and were often treated in a terrible way.

It pays sometimes to look back.

Rejoice in the progress that has occurred but reflect also on areas where strife and injustice still exists and commit to do something about it.
